International E-Waste Day 2026: Fast Tech takes centre stage

87% of European consumers own at least one Fast Tech device, but only 32% exclusively use appropriate recycling or reuse channels, according to a new study by the WEEE Forum.

To mark International E-Waste Day, celebrated on 14 October, the WEEE Forum is focusing this year on Fast Tech: small, low-cost electronic devices, such as USB cables, LED lights, chargers and electronic toys, which often have a short lifespan.

A study conducted by Bellegarde Scientific Consulting, involving more than 10,000 people across 12 European countries, reveals that 78% purchased a Fast Tech product in the past year, while 58% recall using at least one such device for six months or less.

However, their proper management remains a challenge. Some 29% of consumers keep devices they no longer use at home, while a significant proportion dispose of them in inappropriate waste bins, making material recovery more difficult and increasing environmental risks.

Under the slogan “Fast Tech: Don’t bin it, bring it!”, this year’s campaign reminds us that any device with a plug, cable or battery must be properly managed at the end of its useful life, regardless of its size or price.

At ECOTIC, we are once again joining this international initiative to raise awareness of the importance of separate collection, reuse and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), helping to promote a more circular economy.
